The song as explained from lyricist’s perspective. This romantic yet philosophical sad Ghazal song deals with unrequited love among other failures of life in a very intensely emotional way. It will calm the listener’s nerves with music of some classic live instruments with modern sounds and music arrangement accompanied by an equally beautiful melody and voice. It leaves the listener humming the song due to elegant Ghazal style singing by the accomplished singer effectively expressing the emotions behind lyrics. The lyricist has carefully chosen appeasing words and weaved deeply meaningful metaphors to bring out the central idea of the poem in a truly enjoyable way. Cherish it while you fully understand and appreciate the metaphors used in every couplet explained in detail here, along with meanings of difficult words. 1. ना कभी कोई मुझे वो मिला, जो मेरे जिगर में उतर गया, ना कभी कोई मुझे चाहता, मैं तो अपने ख़ूँ से निखर गया, naa kabhii mujhe ko.ii vo milaa, jo mere jigar me.n utar gayaa, naa kabhii ko.ii mujhe chaahtaa, mai.n to apne khuu.n se nikhar gayaa, ख़ूँ - blood निखर गया - became clean and pure The poet says that he neither found anyone who was able to touch the depths of his heart nor was there anyone who loved him and that he became pure, clean, refined, strengthened through his own pains and struggles rather than due to the effects of love that was never there. The metaphor of blood is beautifully used to symbolize his own pains, sufferings and struggles bathing in which made him clean, pure, reinvigorated and strong. This hook has been sung with a lot of feeling by the singer carrying out the display of such emotions intensely. 2. ना मैं चाह कर भी वो बन सका, ना मैं कोई दिल में उभर सका, मैं वो सच हूँ जो कहीं छुप गया, ना हूँ झूठ मैं जो सँवर गया, naa mai.n chaah kar bhii vo ban sakaa, naa mai.n ko.ii dil me.n ubhar sakaa, mai.n vo sach huu.n jo kahii.n chhup gayaa, na huu.n jhuuTh mai.n jo sa.nvar gayaa, सँवर – decorate The poet accepts the fact that he could not achieve that level of success which she always wanted him to become and that he, therefore, could not rise in anyone’s heart to the extent that he would be loved or admired. Now, the poet uses the metaphors of truth and falsehoods quite meaningfully to bring out the philosophical truth of the world in which people always wants to hide the truth and exaggerate the display of falsehoods. Similarly, he got hidden somewhere like people hide the truth and could not surface in a decorated way like people display their falsehoods. 3. याँ शि'आर कुछ चला है वो, मेरी पुकार कोई सुनेगा क्यूँ, ये पुकार में ही असर ना था, सो हो के मैं ख़ाक-बसर गया, yaa.n shi'aar kuchh chalaa hai vo, merii pukaar ko.ii sunegaa kyuu.n, ye pukaar me.n hii asar naa thaa, so ho ke mai.n KHaak-basar gayaa, शि'आर - custom, trend ख़ाक-बसर - weeping mournfully and worried and carrying dust and mud on head Here, the poet explains harshness of the ways of the world wherein the trend is so strong to ignore other people’s pains and sufferings that his call for help is hardly possible to get noticed in such environment. Perhaps, his call for help itself has lost its’ efficacy and therefore, he leaves the world weeping mournfully and with dust and mud on his head the symbol of burial. Then, the song slowly fades away with Aalaap beautifully rendered by the singer.
ख़ूँ - blood
सँवर – decorate
निखर गया - became clean and pure
शि'आर - custom, trend
ख़ाक-बसर - weeping mournfully and worried and carrying dust and mud on head
