The song as explained from lyricist’s perspective. This Ghazal is a scream of the lovelorn heart of a guy beautifully narrating the pangs of unrequited love by questioning many things that is happening to him. Beautifully composed and beautifully and effectively sung by the singer, this Ghazal resonates with all of us who have at some point in time felt the pangs of love and separation during our lives. Also, the deeply meaningful lyrics bring out the pains of unrequited love with completely uniquely styled innocent questions that arise with a situation like this in anyone’s life. Thoughtful nuanced approach to song writing has equally been supported by the Music and singing, making the song highly relatable and enjoyable giving peace and tranquillity to its’ listeners. The hook line captures the essence of the intense feeling of helpless regret stating that while there are other happinesses, but all gets overshadowed by the sadness arising out of memories of unrequited love and leaves our eyes moistened and dewy. 1. मिल के भी ना मिली ख़ुशी, आँख क्यूँ शबनमी रही, मिल के भी ना तू मिल सका, ना तेरी महरमी रही, शबनमी - dewy महरमी – intimacy mil ke bhii naa milii KHushii, aa.nkh kyuu.n shabnamii rahii, mil ke bhii naa tuu mil sakaa, naa terii mahramii rahii, It means happiness was indeed meted out by life but to no avail as it could not be enjoyed in the light of dewy eyes left by pains of unrequited love. His beloved was indeed with him sometime but the intimacy between them could not be preserved for long. 2. तुझ को कहा है हम-निदा, तुज को ही माना दिल-सिताँ, फिर भी न जाने क्यूँ, ये दिल के काँच पे ज़ंग जमी रही, हम-निदा - singing in concord दिल-सिताँ - beloved ज़ंग – rust tujh ko kahaa hai ham-nidaa, tujh ko hii maanaa dil-sitaa.n, fir bhii naa jaane kyuu.n, ye dil ke kaa.nch pe za.ng jamii rahii, The guy tells his girl that he believed her to be her co-singer and beloved in life. He further wonders as to why it so happened that the mirror of his heart remained too rusted with pains to reflect her love. 3. जब तू गया था छोड़ कर, तब जो ये मातमी थी अब, कोई न हम-दमी रही, कोई न बाहमी रही, मातमी - mourning हम-दमी - companionship बाहमी - reciprocity, mutual jab tuu gayaa thaa chho.D kar, tab jo ye maatamii thii ab, ko.ii naa ham-damii rahii, ko.ii naa baahamii rahii, The guy further says that he was terribly gloomy first time when she left him, and now, it has so happened with the passage of time that between them there is neither any companionship nor any reciprocity left. 4. रह के भी दूर तुझ से, क़ुर्बत यूँ ही क्यूँ बनी रही, साथी के मिल ने से भी, क्यूँ साथ की ही कमी रही, क़ुर्बत – nearness rah ke bhii duur tujh se, qurbat yuu.n hii kyuu.n banii rahii, saathii ke milne se bhii, kyuu.n saath kii hii kamii rahii, Now the lovelorn guy raises a moot philosophical question that is most fundamental to all love tales. He innocently wonders as to why it often so happens that despite being away from each other the nearness to the beloved keeps haunting the love smitten hearts, and why, despite the presence of a companion in life, we all still feel the deficiency, shortfall of companionship. What a beautiful use of oxymoron in both the lines making the song most cherish able! 5. ग़म को पनप ने के लिए, क्यूँ मिली दिल की ही ज़मीं, क्यूँ हो गया ये अब कि ना आसमाँ ना ज़मीं रही, पनप - to sprout Gam ko panap ne ke liye, kyuu.n milii dil kii hii zamii.n, kyuu.n ho gayaa ye ab ki naa aasmaa.n naa zamii.n rahii, Another innocently asked question is sharply philosophical about the ways of life and love. Why it so happens that to bloom and sprout, sorrows of life invariably choose the fertile ground of our heart. And, with the passage of time, these pains thrive and grow in our heart to such an extent that finally we neither feel exaltation nor feel gloominess, beautifully mentioned with metaphors of sky and earth respectively. The song slowly fades away leaving a charming, calming, silent scream of love and leaves the listener with a pure, haunting mellifluous intoxication of music and love inter-mingled with beautiful metaphors and words.
